Black students in Iowa make up 7% of the student population and 21% of school arrests. A new ACLU report found Black students are arrested at nearly four times the rate of their peers, even though research shows they don't misbehave more often. Students with disabilities face similar disparities. Officers are getting called in for vaping, pushing, and being "disrespectful," things teachers used to handle. Nearly 30 of the districts studied don't even require SRO training, and none have a complaint process built for these officers specifically. The ACLU is calling for these programs to be eliminated.
