AI just designed completely new viruses that have never existed in nature. For the first time ever, an AI system generated full viral genomes from scratch. Stanford researchers then built 16 of these AI-designed bacteriophages in the lab — viruses that only attack bacteria and cannot infect humans. Several of them killed E. coli more effectively than the natural viruses they were based on. The model behind this, Evo 2, is now open source and free for anyone to download.
