This morning, Penn State Fayette gathered together wearing denim to show their support for Denim Day, an annual campaign to raise awareness of sexual assault and its harmful misconceptions. Denim Day was started by the Peace Over Violence organization in 1999 in response to the Italian Supreme Court ruling that overturned a rape conviction because the victim was wearing tight jeans at the time of the assault. The verdict sparked outrage and protests, becoming known as the "jeans case." In response, Denim Day was created as a way to protest against harmful attitudes and myths surrounding sexual assault. The campaign has since spread to other countries and is now observed in many parts of the world. By wearing denim, these wonderful people sent a message that no matter what a person wears, they never deserve to be the victim of sexual violence.
