When the Moon and Sun align
This rare sight — a total solar eclipse — was photographed in San Millán de los Caballeros, Spain, on Aug. 12.
The Sun is 400 times wider than the Moon, but in a cosmic coincidence, it's also 400 times further away. This means that they appear to be the same size in our sky — and when the Moon passes in front, it can perfectly block the Sun.
