📰 #WayBackWednesday Continuing to tell our Centennial story! Eighty years ago this week, the Aug. 9, 1946, edition of the Venice Gondolier announced plans for a communitywide Labor Day celebration—and Venice certainly knew how to fill an itinerary! The festivities were expected to include horse racing, aerial stunts, boat races, field events, a fish fry on the beach and an evening dance. Sponsored by American Legion Post 159 Venice FL, the celebration was expected to welcome hundreds of visitors from Venice, Nokomis, Osprey, Englewood and Laurel. Mayor Clyde V. Higel even issued a proclamation encouraging local businesses and residents to join in the festivities. Some things never change!
