Under high heat nearing 115 degrees Fahrenheit, troopers assigned to the sniper section, 1st Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, conducted a squad-designated marksman qualification with the M110A1 rifle July 23 at Trapnell Sniper Range at Fort Hood. The training combined known and unknown distance engagements ranging 300-600 meters, requiring troopers to rapidly adjust for wind, elevation and target identification under strict time constraints. Leaders emphasized training in demanding conditions to prepare troopers for combat, where weather and terrain are unpredictable.
