Actually ecological coaches do give feedback. It just doesn’t always look like traditional coaching. Traditional coaching has created a very visible picture of what “good coaching” should look like: Constant instructions. Repeated demonstrations. Immediate corrections. Frequent interventions. When coaches talk less, some people assume they are doing less. But more communication does not automatically produce more learning. Ecological coaches are often hands off but eyes on. We carefully observe: What the player is trying to achieve. What information is guiding their actions. What movement solutions are emerging. How behaviour changes as the task unfolds. Whether the practice is supporting exploration, attunement or calibration. We then shape learning through practice design. We manipulate constraints, create meaningful problems and expose players to information they must learn to interact with. And yes, we still talk.
