DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys, assisted by researchers from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, produced the world’s largest 2D color map of the universe. The map contains almost 4 billion celestial objects. The project has been in development for 13 years, during which the team at Legacy Surveys released 10 datasets before the map reached its current and largest form. The latest and 11th data release expands the map to 5.6 trillion pixels. The map combines more than 260,000 telescope exposures from three different sky surveys: the Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey, the Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey and the Mayall z-band Legacy Survey. The data was collected by more than 160 scientists.
