Landscape and astrophotographer Steve Walasavage captured three hours of the Grasshopper fire from a hillside on the southern outskirts of The Dalles overnight Aug. 7-8, 2026. The timelapse condenses the scene into about 30 seconds. The fire glows on the horizon as a large plume of smoke rises beneath a star-filled sky. Walasavage, an upstate New York photographer spending the summer visiting family in The Dalles, called the scene “a story of climate change and night sky light pollution.” As of Monday, Aug. 10, the Grasshopper fire had burned 57,087 acres and was 23 percent contained, with 1,656 personnel assigned. The National Interagency Fire Center lists the fire at 3 miles north of Sportsmans Park, a small community in Wasco County near Wamic. --Video courtesy of Steve Walasavage walasavagephoto --Reporting by Mark_W_Graves, The Oregonian/OregonLive #GrasshopperFire #OregonWildfires #TheDalles #WildfirePhotography
