The operator of a boat that capsized by the Statue of Liberty over the weekend was federally charged Monday with causing the deaths of a young mother and her baby girl through misconduct or neglect, while the husband and father in the family reels from his stunning loss in the arms of his community.⁠ ⁠ Manuel Hernandez was at the helm of the 22-foot Yamaha speedboat that flipped over around 10:30 p.m. Saturday near Liberty Island. He was taken into custody by the NYPD early Sunday on reckless endangerment charges, then moved to federal custody overnight.⁠ ⁠ The 46-year-old from Manville, New Jersey, wiped his eyes with his hand as he arrived for his initial appearance in Manhattan federal court. Hernandez was charged with two counts of misconduct and neglect of a ship officer resulting in death.
