I’ve been a principal. I’ve been a superintendent. And if your takeaway from the Darius Cooks conversation is that there’s ONE person to blame, I think we’re missing the point. We absolutely have work to do when it comes to educating our young people. But the problem is layered. Parenting. Schools. Systems. Expectations. Accountability. Culture. The root causes are multifaceted, which means the solution has to be too. We can hold schools accountable AND parents accountable. We can have empathy for kids AND refuse to lower the bar.
