August 16th is National Airborne Day! It is on this day in 1940 that the first official Army parachute jump took place at Ft. Benning, Georgia. This jump validated the innovative concept of inserting United States ground combat forces behind an enemy line by parachute.
For today, Howard letterpress printed a woodcut from the Eleanor McClatchy Collection. The print depicts a man and a parachute but we don’t think he is using the parachute safely or correctly. This was printed with green rubber base ink using our Washington hand press, which was made in 1852.
