August 15th World Honey Bee Day! This day reminds us of the value of honey bees, especially as pollinators. Considering Sacramento’s longest running newspaper is The Sacramento Bee, we couldn’t pass this day up. For today, Channey letterpress printed an image of a busy bee from an electrotype, made about 130-135 years ago, from the Lewis Winter Collection. An electrotype is a copy of a woodcut. Lewis Winter was a woodcut artist and engraver who had his business at 627 J Street in Sacramento from 1888 to 1910. Many of the cuts in his collection at the Sacramento History Museum are of items that would have been featured in local newspapers and magazines in the 1890s. This was printed with green rubber base ink using our Washington hand press.
