Sport hunters killed almost 2,000 mountain lions in Arizona from 2018 to 2024. Among those killed 54% were kittens under a year old or juveniles under 2. On top of that, 41% were females — and killing more than 20% of adult females can sharply reduce lion populations.
So last week the Center for Biological Diversity sued the Arizona Game and Fish Department and Commission challenging their lion quotas as unsustainable. We asked the court to stop issuing sport-hunting permits for them until the population recovers. Puma-hunting season begins Aug. 21.
“Arizona’s state-sanctioned killing of kittens and juvenile mountain lions is beyond cruel,” said Robin Silver, one of the Center’s cofounders. “It’s time to end this slaughter and ensure mountain lions continue to roam the wilds of Arizona in the future.”
