The BLM and utility company NV Energy are trying to ram a 235-mile transmission line project, called Greenlink North, through central Nevada — mostly to generate power for data centers. This spells disaster for greater sage grouse, the West's beloved dancing birds. Greater sage grouse are an indicator of healthy sagebrush ecosystems. They rely on intact habitat for their "leks," or mating grounds, where they congregate each spring to enchant the world with their mesmerizing mating dances. But lek buffers, seasonal timing restrictions, and noise restrictions are being unceremoniously trashed to push through the transmission line as quickly as possible.
