Thank you People Magazine | Let’s start with the obvious question: why wasn’t that racist costume screened and stopped BEFORE it reached the Miss Universe Canada stage? Because when the people responsible for screening and approving content are covertly racist themselves, creating an environment that contestants experience as racist and exclusionary, how are we supposed to trust the process? Why would they care if they have the same racist beliefs? At some point, you have to look at the pattern. I’m speaking about my experience and what I witnessed. You cannot market diversity and empowerment while contestants are experiencing exclusion, stereotypes and different standards behind the scenes. People of color deserve more than being included for the aesthetic.
