🌙 Day 20 of our 30 days of Summer 🌙 Tomorrow, something pretty special is happening in our skies… On Wednesday 12th August, we’re going to see one of the best solar eclipses visible from the UK this century. A solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, temporarily blocking some of the Sun’s light. Here in the UK it will be a partial eclipse, but it’s a big one from London, around 90% of the Sun will be covered at its peak! So today we made our own moons using just black card, glue, salt and watercolours a really simple little activity to get the children talking about what’s actually going to be happening up there. The eclipse begins at around 6.17pm, reaching its maximum at around 7.12pm, so we’ll definitely be heading outside to watch it. Just remember: never look directly at the Sun. You’ll need proper solar eclipse glasses or another safe viewing method. I absolutely love when something happening in the real world gives us a reason to learn...
