When my daughter was struggling with going to school, I remember her telling me - quietly, almost like she didn’t want me to hear it - “I just don’t think I’m a school person.”
She wasn’t being dramatic.
She believed it.
I could see it.
By then she’d already missed over 100 days that year.
I’d tried everything anyone told me to try.
And somewhere in all of it, without either of us really noticing, my kid had built a whole story about who she was out of what her body kept doing every morning.
The story wasn’t true.
It just felt true, because nothing had proven it wrong yet.
What actually changed things wasn’t a pep talk or a new routine or another hour with a therapist.
It was helping her body feel safe enough, morning after morning, to start collecting different evidence.
Slowly.
Not all at once.
That same kid successfully graduated high school with entry into her first-choice university.
I’m not sharing that to say it’s easy, or fast, or the same for every child.
