Local newsrooms have been shrinking for years. A growing share of Americans recognize the financial struggles — 39% now say their local news outlets are not doing well financially, up from 24% just a few years ago.
Yet while eight-in-ten U.S. adults say local news is at least somewhat important to their community, only 12% say they’ve paid for local news in the past year.
The top reason people give for not paying: They say they can find plenty of local news for free.
