On Thursday, August 13th, Hamilton College announced that it has been awarded a $1.975 million grant through New York State’s Higher Education Capital Matching Grant Program (HECap) to support continued renovations to Sage Rink.
First constructed in 1921, Sage Rink is touted as being the “oldest continuously operating college hockey rink in the country.” The rink is named for financier and railroad magnate Russell Sage, whose widow included Hamilton College among the institutions she supported philanthropically. Sage passed away in 1906.
There was previously a $13 million investment by Hamilton that was completed in September of 2024. The latest improvements will include the addition of new locker rooms for the men’s and women’s ice hockey teams, a conference room and office space. The work is part of a multi-phase renovation plan for Sage Rink. In total, Hamilton College states commitments of $20 million are needed for the full proposed project.
