. At the San Francisco’s coastline sits a phone that isn’t connected to anything, but that’s exactly the point. Known as “Ocean Calling,” the installation invites visitors to pick up the disconnected phone, look out over the Pacific, and speak to someone they’ve lost. Created by San Francisco artists Jamae Tasker and Sarah McCarthy Grimm, the project was inspired by Japan’s “Phone of the Wind,” a similar space created for people experiencing grief and loss. There’s no one listening on the other end. No call is actually being made. It’s simply a place to say the things you still wish you could say.
