Unfortunately straight line winds can create damage that looks a lot like tornado damage if you don't have the tools to see the whole picture.
Meteorologists use drones, helicopters or planes to survey damage from thousands of feet to see the full damage swath all at once.
It's certainly not an easy task and the bigger the damage path, the bigger the undertaking.
While initial reports are often published a few days after a severe weather event, sorting through all the documented damage and finalizing the reports can take weeks.
