CONDORS BACK IN THE WILD. ventanawildlifesociety’s Condor Program was caring for two condors that had completed treatment for lead poisoning and were ready to return to the wild. But with the Timber Fire threatening the sanctuary and roads closed because of firefighting operations, there was no safe way for the birds to leave on their own. CAL FIRE and the U.S. Forest Service worked with the sanctuary to reach the remote release pen. After nearly two hours traveling through the incident area, they made it to the birds and safely released both condors back into the wild. Within minutes, the two birds joined a group of wild condors already in the area and began flying east toward the mountains. Every life matters during a wildfire, including the wildlife caught in its path.
