Salvation isn’t earned. It is a gift from God and God alone.
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs.” Matthew 5:3
Being poor in Jesus’ day didn’t just mean living paycheck to paycheck or not being able to add queso and guac at Chipotle. Being poor meant having absolutely nothing. To have so little that you have to beg on the streets in the same clothes you’ve had forever.
Being poor meant solely relying on the compassion and mercy of others. Being poor meant that even if you felt gratitude, there was no way for you to repay those whole have helped you.
So, what does it mean to be poor in spirit? It means to have absolutely nothing, and be given it all. Gifted by God unto us, salvation cannot be repaid no matter how much gratitude and thankfulness we feel. A gift given could be repaid by another gift of equal value, yet nothing we have could ever come close.
Have you contemplated the infinite gift of salvation?
