Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) has had a growing impact on Utah’s elk industry, with 60 confirmed cases in the past two years and animals often declining rapidly after appearing healthy.
Rectal biopsies have become a valuable tool, giving producers and managers a clearer picture of CWD on individual farms, supporting monitoring in infected herds and strengthening surveillance efforts.
Through this work, Utah has become a leader in CWD management, drawing interest from other states, while producers continue to value the insight these biopsies provide as they plan for the future.
