One week ago, the Moon’s shadow swept across Earth. While Meteosat-12’s Flexible Combined Imager captured the view in colour, its Lightning Imager (LI) recorded the event from a totally different perspective! 🌖🛰️
To detect lightning pulses, the LI continuously captures single-channel background measurements (at 777 nm wavelength) once per minute across its four cameras.
In this imagery captured by the North-oriented camera, you can see the sudden dip in brightness as the eclipse passes directly through the instrument's field of view.
