Margaret Henley’s father inspired Long John Silver in Treasure Island. His daughter had a speech problem, and called his friend “my fwendy-wendy” — meaning “my friendy.” She died of meningitis in 1894, aged five. That friend later named his play’s lead character Wendy, after her nickname. #BritishHistory #UKHistory #LiteraryHistory
