George was a real London crossing sweeper, about fifteen, with no parents anyone could find. Handed a Bible to swear on in court around 1850, he had no idea what it was for. Charles Dickens turned him into Jo, the crossing sweeper who dies of neglect in Bleak House. The real boy vanished from every record after that. #BritishHistory #UKHistory #DickensHistory
