BMW and Clemson University teamed up to rethink what an ultra-efficient EV could look like. The result is Deep Orange 17, a lightweight solar-powered prototype covered in more than 1,700 solar cells. The goal is ambitious: harvest enough energy from the sun to generate more electricity than the car consumes during a typical urban commute.
Developed by graduate students at Clemson’s International Center for Automotive Research with support from BMW, the experimental EV explores how lightweight construction, extreme efficiency and integrated solar power could reduce how often future electric cars need to plug in.
