Knowing that Devils Tower is sacred ground to some of the friends I’ve made here in South Dakota made experiencing it so much more meaningful than simply being amazed by the view. For generations, Indigenous nations including the Lakota, Cheyenne, Kiowa, Crow, and others have held deep spiritual and cultural connections to this place, using it for prayer, ceremonies, and vision quests. The Lakota name, Mato Tipila, means “Bear Lodge.” Standing there, I felt like I was experiencing more than a beautiful natural wonder.
