Bringing the ocean to the lab 🌊 At Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the Scripps Ocean-Atmosphere Research Simulator (SOARS) recreates one of Earth’s most complex systems right on campus. This 120-foot wave channel and wind tunnel lets researchers simulate everything from tropical seas to polar conditions using real Pacific Ocean water. Why it matters: the boundary between ocean and atmosphere drives weather, climate, air quality and human health. With SOARS, scientists can study these interactions in controlled conditions, test new instruments, and collaborate across disciplines to better understand our changing planet.
