Talent gets you noticed. Resilience is what gets you there. Early on, physical gifts stand out. You can dunk. You’re faster than everyone else. Maybe you hit your growth spurt before the other kids and suddenly you’re a head above the pack. But some of the most physically gifted athletes I’ve ever coached never played college ball. Never made a state or national team. And they were more talented than half the kids who did. Why? Because talent alone doesn’t finish the job. - Some get let down, promises made, promises broken. - Some lose the fire, the years of grind wear them down and they check out. - Some just get hit by life, circumstances outside their control derail the plan.
