Great news: Berlinale has become a qualifying festival for the Film Independent Spirit Awards. Together with filmindependent we are committed to celebrating independent filmmaking and creating new opportunities for emerging storytellers around the world.   As the only qualifying festival outside North America, official Berlinale 2026 selections may qualify for consideration for the 2027 Film Independent Spirit Awards in the categories Best Documentary, Best International Film and the new category Best International First Feature, provided they meet Film Independent’s eligibility requirements.   Among the eligibility requirements, films must have a production budget of under $30 million and a runtime of at least 70 minutes.   Submissions for the 2027 Spirit Awards are open through October.
