andrew hozier byrne first read inferno by dante alighieri in 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic, and he did so because it was the first time he was able to slow down in years 
the divine comedy was published in the 14th century, and essentially depicts what dante imagines h*ll or the underworld to be like — which leads to an extremely interesting structure for an album 
the punishments are cruel beyond measure, and dante’s journey through the depths of it offer some of the most eye opening experiences as a reader 
it’s hard to know what exactly makes this text so enduring to last hundreds of years, but to me it comes down to the visceral imagery, as well as the stunning selection of quotable moments 
“abandon all hope ye who enter here” welcomes you at the gates, whereas the quote below follows you far beyond the pages of the inferno into everyday life
