A homeless man who stabbed two people in Hempstead — one fatally — within a month of each other in the fall of 2023 was sentenced to up to life in prison. After two trials, Melbis Hernandez was convicted of second-degree murder, second-degree attempted murder and attempted assault in the first degree for the attacks on the two men.
