Texas Southern's Board of Regents approved Corey Lowery as the program's next head basketball coach Wednesday, voting 6-1 in a special session — one day after players, students, and alumni staged a campus demonstration demanding the university keep interim coach Shyrone Chatman.
Chatman took over in April after Johnny Jones left to join LSU's staff, and led the Tigers through a search that stretched more than four months. Players who rallied behind him carried signs on campus and met directly with university president James W. Crawford III before the board's vote.
Lowery joins Texas Southern after four seasons as an assistant at Seton Hall and a previous head coaching stint at Lincoln University, where he was named CIAA Coach of the Year in 2021-22. The Board of Regents also approved Ashley Robinson as the university's new athletic director in the same session.
