Steve Spurrier's second-ranked Florida Gators completed the first undefeated, untied regular season in school history, dispatching Arkansas 34 to 3 to claim their third straight SEC championship and fourth in five years, and earn a national title showdown with No. 1 Nebraska in the Fiesta Bowl. The win made Florida just the second program ever to win three consecutive SEC titles, joining Bear Bryant's Alabama, while the Razorbacks made history of their own as the first team other than Alabama or Florida to reach the league's showcase game, winning the West in just their fourth SEC season.
Arkansas came out swinging, grinding out a 16-play, 65-yard opening drive that ate up more than half the first quarter before the Florida defense stiffened, forcing a 37-yard Todd Latourette field goal for a 3-to-0 Razorback lead.
