A coup conducted without tanks.
In one week this July, President Noboa's government closed three of the channels Ecuadorians use to contest power. The electoral council refused to release the recall forms. The Constitutional Court refused to hear the largest opposition party's appeal against its own suspension. The electoral tribunal suspended AMIGO, the movement its candidates had arranged to run under, one day before the registration deadline.
Each ruling looked lawful on its own. Together they let a president choose his opponents.
The local elections of November 29 will test whether Ecuador's doors are narrowed or shut. The recall belongs to the people, not to a party. From Quito to Chicago, our struggle is one.
