Fake has become so normal that people get offended by honesty.
25 years in this market has taught Guy Hepner that the hardest part of the job was never finding the buyer. It's telling the seller the truth.
When the gallery values a piece, the number is what the market will actually pay ā not what the client paid, not what they hoped, not what a valuation certificate in a drawer says. Sometimes it's higher than expected. Sometimes it isn't. Either way, it's the number that gets the work sold.
That's the difference between a professional and an amateur. The pro tells you the truth so the deal gets done. The amateur tells you what you want to hear, takes the consignment, and three months later you're staring at an unsold piece wondering what went wrong.
Honesty isn't the uncomfortable part of this business. It's the service.
š© DM the gallery for a straight appraisal on your Warhol, Basquiat, Haring, Banksy, Hockney, KAWS or Kusama.
