Days after 150 cars waited in line for the opening on SE 14th Street of Des Moines' first Dutch Bros coffee location, the Downtown Neighborhood Association is opposing the Phoenix-based coffee chain's proposal for another drive-thru off Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway. In a letter to the Des Moines City Council, the group's board urged elected officials to uphold downtown zoning standards that bar drive-thrus such as the one Dutch Bros plans for a vacant lot bordered by SW Eighth and SW Ninth streets. The letter said the association opposed the Dutch Bros drive-thru because it would increase the number of places where traffic crosses sidewalks and dedicated bike lanes in the already high-traffic area. It also said the single-story drive-thru would violate the zoning code that requires new construction downtown to be at least three stories tall, and that it would lock "valuable downtown land into low-density uses."
