August 20th is National Radio Day! This day recognizes the invention of the radio and celebrates the news, information, music, and entertainment carried across the airwaves. Radio had its beginnings in Sacramento over 100 years ago. We think about The Sacramento Bee as our local newspaper but the McClatchy Corporation once had radio and TV stations as well. Strict cross-ownership rules implemented by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) brought an end to that in the 1980s. It wasn’t until recently that we had a local radio related item in our print shop. For today, Jared letterpress printed a photo engravings depicting Gaby, the mascot for The Bee’s radio ventures. This one in particular was for The Fresno Bee’s KMJ radio which launched in 1953 until it was sold in 1987. It operates today as KSEE 24.
