Every time you change gear, you are managing friction on purpose.
A clutch is a mechanical switch for torque. The crankshaft never stops turning, but the gearbox input shaft must stop and start to allow gear changes. The clutch sits between the two and decides whether they are locked together or free to spin independently.
The assembly is deceptively simple:
- Flywheel: a heavy steel disc bolted to the crankshaft, storing inertia and providing one friction face
- Clutch disc: a splined plate faced with friction material, free to slide along the input shaft
- Pressure plate: a spring-loaded cover that clamps the disc against the flywheel
- Release bearing: pushes the diaphragm spring fingers to unclamp everything
With the pedal up, the diaphragm spring squeezes the disc between flywheel and pressure plate with several kilonewtons of force. Static friction locks all three into one rotating mass, and every newton metre the engine makes reaches the wheels.
