In this four-panel comic I depict something that happened around 20 years ago, when I scaled up an anime-style figure to life size and presented it in the American art scene. After it sold for a high price at auction, I ended up attracting a great deal of hate from otaku in Japan. Toshio Okada, the “King of Otaku” and now a popular otaku YouTuber, introduced me to Shuichi Miyawaki, the well-known executive vice president (Senmu, as he’s also known) of the figure manufacturer Kaiyodo. Through him, I met the figure creator BOME, and then had Toru Saegusa, who had made masks for Kamen Rider and other productions, create a large sculpture for me. Then came the backlash. This is the story of those sad days. I was also given the opportunity to contribute this comic to the doujinshi Amai Marui vol. 2.
