This made me cry and reminded me why I changed my handle to NYC Gay Dad over 10 years ago.
I’m certainly nowhere near an “icon” as we know so many dads paved the way before me. But when it came to social media, there weren’t a lot of us putting ourselves out there. Honestly, it was selfish too. I didn’t just want other LGBTQ+ parents to find me - I wanted to find them.
That mattered even more after I lost my husband, Tim, in 2013. I felt more alone than ever, and using
#gaydad (a hashtag that’s often suppressed now) is how we found each other.
Being just a dad has always been the goal. I thought we were close and I even debated changing my handle back to “José Rolón.” Then this administration came after our community, especially our trans family in away we haven’t felt in decades.
So even though handles and hashtags like mine get buried today, I’ll keep being NYC Gay Dad — if it means one person somewhere is debating whether being a gay dad is even possible.
