Where does Himalayan art come from?
People’s lives intersect at an extraordinary range of places in the greater Himalayan region, from river valleys to alpine peaks, pine forests to arid deserts.
Himalayan art spans the artistic traditions of these diverse regions, which include the greater Himalayas, the Tibetan Plateau, and connected areas of Inner Asia.
As pilgrims, traders, teachers, monks, and artists moved across these regions, they carried artworks, ideas, and visual traditions with them.
This is the first post in our series on how to look more closely at Himalayan art. We begin with place: the regions and connections that shape Tibetan and Himalayan art.
