This deserves more attention than it is getting. AI reportedly played a meaningful role in designing Moderna and Merck’s personalized mRNA melanoma treatment, and that treatment has now succeeded in Phase 3. The process is remarkable. Sequencing data from a patient’s tumor and blood is analyzed using AI algorithms. The system identifies mutations and predicts up to 34 neoantigens most likely to trigger that individual patient’s immune system. Those targets become the blueprint for a custom mRNA therapy built for that specific tumor. In a Phase 3 trial involving 1,137 patients with high risk melanoma that had been surgically removed, the personalized therapy combined with Keytruda significantly improved both recurrence free survival and distant metastasis free survival compared with Keytruda alone.
