On August 18, 1920, Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the 19th Amendment thus reaching three-quarters of the states required to ratify the Constitutional Amendment nationwide. The 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution argues, “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.” It was a long, arduous fight for women’s suffrage. The notion of women’s suffrage began in Seneca Falls, New York in July 1848 when a group of 300 people held a convention to discuss the “social, civil, and religious condition and rights of women.” It was the first formal women’s rights convention to be held in the United States. Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s “Declaration of Sentiments” argued that the convention was just the beginning.
