What happens if you owe the IRS money and simply…do nothing? The IRS generally has a limited period of time to collect an assessed tax debt. That's where the famous 10-year IRS collection statute comes from. And in this case, someone with old tax debt is wondering whether staying silent could actually work in their favor. They're filing their current tax returns. They haven't entered into a payment plan. They haven't submitted an Offer in Compromise. And, apparently, the IRS isn't actively coming after them.
