2 year ago today, Magdalena Bay released ‘Imaginal Disk.’ Magdalena Bay expanded their kaleidoscopic synth-pop universe with ‘Imaginal Disk,’ the Los Angeles duo’s second studio album. Released through Mom+Pop, the 15-track project was self-produced by Mica Tenenbaum and Matthew Lewin and mixed by Dave Fridmann. Drawing from psychedelic pop, electronic music, funk, and ‘90s-inspired textures, the record feels deliberately maximalist while maintaining the duo’s knack for instantly memorable melodies. At the heart of the album is a surreal science-fiction narrative in which Tenenbaum’s character, True, undergoes a strange transformation involving an extraterrestrial disk and must rediscover what it means to be human.
