What happens when a data center moves in next door? In Lowell, Massachusetts residents have lived beside this data center since construction began in 2015. They describe cooling tower mist falling on their yards, noise loud enough to require earmuffs, and cameras pointed at their homes. The company that owns the data center, Markley, says the property has always been industrial, that they’ve invested over $700,000 in sound abatement, and that the cameras are just for security and can’t see into people’s homes.
But the neighbors CBS Reporter Riley Callanan spoke with disagree, and some said they are selling their homes over it.
